Pardis aka Spine Chiropractic : Keeping the Legacy Alive

Updated: Jul 20, 2023

Dr. James Pardis

For over 25 years, Pardis Chiropractic Clinic now known to be Pardis aka Spine Chiropractic Wellness Center has been a go-to clinic for Cebuanos experiencing back, neck, muscle, or other musculoskeletal pain.

The late Dr. James Pardis has been one of the few licensed Chiropractors on the island. He was known to provide treatments for simple headaches to treatments for post-surgical patients and athletic injuries.

The dilemma of continuing serving Cebuano patients loomed when Dr. Pardis died on 2021. Not until they met Dr. Dale James Mc Sherry, a Chiropractic Doctor from Hawaii who recently moved to the Philippines for his son’s education.

“My son and I moved here in Cebu last year (2022). We came to see my relative, and my wife’s family, and bring my son over. I want my son to go to school here while I retire and do some projects here,” says Dr. Dale shared.

Although Pardis aka Spine Chiropractic got itself a new owner and Chiropractor, Dr. Dale decided to retain a portion of the name to the clinic to give honor to the late Dr. Pardis and so that if one day one of Dr. Pardis' children wishes to continue their father’s legacy they can.

“Dr. Pardis was a wonderful chiropractor… he was a legend… He was a pioneer, started this, and did a lot of good work here. So I met his family and talked to his children. Eventually, one of his sons gonna come back and be a chiropractor, so we are keeping the name,” Dr. Dale added.

Getting to know Doc Dale

Filling the shoes of Dr. Pardis is also no ordinary man. Before moving to Cebu, he has already built a name in Chiropractic in Hawaii and even won an award in his first year in practice.

“I practiced in Hawaii for 30 years and won an award as the best chiropractor on my island in my first year. Our clinic was also regarded as one of the top 50 fastest-growing businesses in the state of Hawaii,” claimed Dr. Dale.

He received his degree in Chiropractic Medicine from the University of Western States and went through several further studies to improve his craft.

“In my school, the University of Western States, they taught us medicine. We don’t just crack. Because in the state of Oregon, there weren’t enough medical doctors in rural areas. So I learned to do a lot of stuff. I was also an army medic for 6 years and was exposed to a different lot of things,” Dr. Dale said.

He also finished his master's degree and emphasized the importance of trusting only those who are experts and authority in Chiropractic Practice.

“When you go to a Chiropractor’s office, you better look for this (referring to diploma and training certificates). If they don’t, they’re not a chiropractor. Be careful, they’re gonna hurt people,” Dr. Dale pointed.

We don’t just crack

Chiropractic Treatment has been widely accepted nowadays, thanks to the gratifying cracks you hear and see on TikTok videos from several Chiropractors. But Dr. Dale highlighted that there is more to what meets the eye.

“Diagnosis, diagnosis, diagnosis. No assumptions – that’s how I operate. We don’t do assumptions here. What you see online, a lot of those who claim to be chiropractors just crack people. Here, we take it from a physical medicine point of view,” Dr. Dale highlighted.

Dr. Dale, who is also trained in therapeutic massage, pointed out that before any adjustments, it is important that the muscles are tended to as most pains start from there.

“It is like a form of physical therapy, so we look for a diagnosis. We are careful, so if we see a patient that needs to be referred to a medical clinic, we refer them to a medical clinic. We gatekeep. We don’t just make assumptions and just crack.” Dr. Dale shared.

Patient Safety and Programs

Chiropractic adjustments are a complement to traditional medical care. It is a manipulation of joints to realign your spine and reduce pain and discomfort, by only using manual hands or small instruments.

“What I like about this profession is that we only use our hands and brain too. It is a natural way of pain relief. We try to get to the solution to the problem. We make sure we have a diagnosis then find out what’s hurting, and then solve the problem,” Dr. Dale highlighted.

Making sure that safety is always the priority, Dr. Dale also shared that they cater to a lot of cases but for patients not less than 7 years old and those who have weak bones.

“We cater to most cases, from frozen shoulders, sciatica, restless leg syndrome, scoliosis, headaches, TMJ, and soon we plan to do a Sinus program also. But we are careful, if we see you have weak bones, and it is beyond my scope of practice, we say no,” Dr. Dale added.

Dr. Dale also hopes to manage expectations in Chiropractic adjustments and emphasized what truly matters.

“Not everybody cracks like that (referring to the online videos of Chiropractors). I would say, one of every 10 patients I have doesn’t crack like that. I don’t look at that, I look at the pain levels, range of motion, and other stuff that matters more than the crack,” Dr. Dale concluded.
